Spotlight: Self-Care Products for Everyone

by Alex @ Raw Recovery on July 23, 2012

Happy Monday everyone!

I’m very happy today because the boyfriend drove down Saturday and is going to be staying with me for a few weeks.  He even woke up early to make me a cup of coffee yesterday and better yet, he was the one who brought the coffee without knowing I ran out right before he arrived.  Love I tell ya :)

I haven’t done a Spotlight in quite some time but it was something I really enjoyed so I’m going to be more diligent about it.  I thought some self-care products would be fun this morning so that’s what I’ll be talking about.

The first product is something that I just saw on Open Sky but ordered off of Amazon.  They are called Hands-on-Feet Reflexology Sox.

You can watch a short video about them and the massage therapist who created them below.  It’s actually quite interesting and I love that she is making products that are more affordable than having regular massages.  Touch therapy is actually very helpful for anyone because it benefits both body and mind.  Massages are especially helpful for those with chronic pain, individuals who carry a lot of stress and tension in their bodies (who doesn’t right?), as well as those who suffer from PTSD (safe touch can be very healing), eating disorders, depression, and anxiety.

I just received my Sox in the mail and I’m excited to try them and let you know how they work! I love the bright colors and that it shows you exactly where to rub for physical problems (like stomach aches) or emotional ailments (it shows certain chakra points-points for calming and relaxation).

The second product I’d like to share is an aromatherapeutic one.  It’s Aveda’s Active Oil.

I love Active because it’s great for sore muscles, but I prefer to use it to make a homemade shower spray.  All I do is get a $1 spray bottle from Target, fill it with water, add 5-10 drops of Active, shake it up and then spray in the shower before I get in.  It’s an easy way to create an aromatherapy shower that’s very invigorating because of the Wintergreen and Menthol.  It would also be a great decongestant in the winter months and putting a few drops in the bath with some epsom salt would work nicely to detoxify.

Because it’s a little pricey (about $20-though it lasts a LONG time, you could also buy smaller bottles of your favorite essential oils like peppermint or tea tree to get the same energizing effect).

Last but not least, this product has helped me WAY more than I thought it would.  It’s Angel Tarot Cards by Doreen Virtue.

I grew up Greek Orthodox with very religious grandparents and family members on my mom’s side.  Tarot cards were considered to be evil, future-telling, fake oracle cards and I was always interested by the idea of them, but never dared to touch them.  My religious beliefs have since shifted over the years and of course if you feel strongly about not using tarot cards, then I respect that.  Self-care is all about what resonates with you and your convictions and values and it’s not my goal to change what anyone believes.

However, I don’t put so much stock in these cards that I think they are 100% completely fool-proof and accurate.  Interestingly enough though, when I have used them (especially to help me overcome urges or when I feel really lost or stuck), I feel like the cards I have chosen have really spoken and resonated with me.  Again it’s another Amazon purchase, and for roughly $10, it was completely worth it to me.

Sometimes I take these into my therapy sessions and talk about the cards I’ve drawn with my therapist to help me give more insight into the problems I currently face.  I even did a card reading for the boyfriend and despite his skepticism, he was VERY surprised that the first card he drew out of the 72-card deck was one that immediately resonated with him in a very deep and personal way.  Again, if this goes against your beliefs, then that’s ok.  If you’re curious about them though, try using them as a tool to help inspire you to get through the day or a problem that comes your way.  The artwork is also incredibly rich and beautiful, making them really lovely to look at.

Well friends, there you have it.  Another set of 3 things I love.

I hope you have a wonderful day and remember that the past no longer exists.  We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand, and melting like a snowflake”. -Francis Bacon

i used to go to this massage lady who used oils like that. she was specialized for disorders and was so particular in the way she used it. it made me feel so good afterwards, usually i can’t handle massages because of the constant contact.

Oh that sounds awesome! I wish I could find someone here that was specialized. I need to do a bit of research. I’m glad that it made you feel good–constant contact is tough for me too sometimes but I think if you find the right therapist that you feel safe with, massage can be so healing.
